2011 Boatercross Results
Boatercross was the last event of the 2011 Potomac Whitewater Festival, and once again it was a huge success. Twelve competitors met for the pre-race meeting at the rubble dam, including three women.
The event consisted of three rounds held in successively harder rapids: the Feeder Canal, Z-Channel, and Little Falls. In the first round competitors had negotiate gates 2, 5, 10, 11, and 16 in the Feeder Canal while jockeying for position and finish by hitting gate 16 with their boat. This was a new twist and forced the competitors to lift their boats into the air with a stern squirt or double pump. It also meant that the 2nd finisher in each heat had to hit a moving target!
In the second round competitors had to circle two buoys and go right of the rock at the bottom of Z-Channel before finishing on the left.
In the final round competitors started from an eddy on the Maryland side of Little Falls, ferried over to the right and ran down the Virginia side, and then finished by touching a volunteer's boat below the island on the Maryland shore. Danny Stock got massively back-endered in the top hole but managed to surf the compression wave upstream of the island into first place and eke out the win.
Every heat was hard-fought, but the competitors showed great sportsmanship and were very supportive of each other. It was truly a pleasure to see so many boaters competing and having fun. I would like to offer special thanks to the women, enough of whom showed up to make a class! I hope everyone comes back next year to make this event even bigger and better. I would also like to thank NRS for their generous sponsorship of this event, and Brian Jennings for driving up from Fayetteville.
