2010 Community Gorge Paddle Results
The water was lower than last year and the weather was overcast, but close to twenty people still showed up for the Community Gorge Paddle and had a blast. Robert and Kira Goo came dressed as purple Martian river boarding princesses and cleaned up on the awards, winning both best costume categories as well as oldest, youngest, and least seaworthy vessel -- although they made it look pretty darn seaworthy. David Lysy won the award for most overprepared by a landslide, and probably had something in his kayak to rescue people should a landslide occur. April Schrock won Most Creative Use of Duct Tape for her paddle patch job, Bill Collier was the Most Old School with his Dagger Response, and Kerry won Farthest Distance Travelled by flying in from San Francisco. The best boater tan award went to Chris Glazner, although everyone agreed that it was a pretty weak field and the event organizer would have creamed everyone if the contest had been held a day later...
On-water events included a stand-up-and-balance-in-your-boat contest, a kayak boom run (which Kira excelled at), and a sunken boat race through Maryland Chute. Thanks to all the participants for making it a wonderful afternoon. Special thanks to reporter Cody Calamaio for joining us on the river and Mike Sawyer for guiding her raft. I hope to see everyone again next year!
